What we do

For 40+ years, Literacy for Life has provided free, one-on-one English and literacy tutoring for adults across San Luis Obispo County. Our trained volunteers help learners build practical skills—reading, writing, speaking, and basic math—so they can find better jobs, support their families, and fully participate in community life.

Who we serve: Adults 16+ (native English speakers and English learners).
Cost: Always free.
Format: One-on-one tutoring (countywide) + one small Conversation Group.
Getting started: We complete a friendly assessment, set goals together, and match you with a tutor.

Programs

1) Adult English & Literacy Tutoring (One-on-One)

Personalized tutoring for adults who want to improve reading, writing, speaking, or basic math. We set goals that matter to you—job applications, work instructions, driver’s tests, medical forms, banking, or reading with your children—and tailor lessons to your pace.

Best for: Native English speakers and English learners who prefer one-on-one support.

2) ESL – English for Newcomers

Individualized instruction for adults who are new to English or building confidence in everyday conversation. We focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing for real-life needs: talking to doctors and teachers, understanding your boss, shopping, transportation, and community services.

Includes: A simple language assessment, custom plan, and all materials provided.

3) Family Literacy Support

When parents build English and literacy skills, the whole family thrives. We help adults gain the confidence to communicate with schools, read with children at home, and navigate homework, forms, and parent-teacher meetings.

Goal: Stronger family routines, better school engagement, and long-term success.

4) Conversation Group (San Luis Obispo)

A welcoming, small group to practice everyday English—introductions, questions, work and school topics, and community life. Facilitated by trained volunteers; great alongside one-on-one tutoring.

Location: SLO (weekly). Space is limited.

5) Tutor Training Workshops

We equip community volunteers with practical tools to teach adults with dignity and effectiveness. Training covers goal-setting, adult-education strategies, ESL basics, phonics/fluency, and using everyday materials.
